Read the three Sprint Filter part numbers for this airbox in a row and something stands out. Two of them carry a condition in the name: one is specified for dust, the other for racing. PM250S carries none. It is the road and track element, the line the other two are described against — and that is more useful than it sounds, because choosing either of the others means making a claim about where the machine is ridden. On a 350 cm³ Trofeo AC used on ordinary roads, that entry is usually the whole answer.

The line the other two are measured from

A standard specification reads easily as an entry-level rung, and here it is not one. The finer nonwoven trades flow for retention; the racing weave trades in the other direction. Each earns its place when the condition in its name matches the riding. PM250S assumes nothing: it sits at the aperture Sprint Filter chose for mixed road use, its low resistance coming from the amount of material rather than an opened mesh, and it is the only one of the three that never asks the owner to be right in advance.

What changes, and what does not

The ceiling first. An element inside a standard airbox does not make a 350 noticeably stronger, and this one is not offered on that basis. Two things do change. The filter's own share of intake restriction starts low and, instead of climbing until somebody buys a new cartridge, is put back to where it began at every cleaning — so the figure the engine lives with over years is the interesting one, not the one on day one. And because the polyester is dry and stays dry, there is no film to travel forward onto the injection hardware and no oiling procedure to get wrong after a wash.

Care and cleaning

PM250S is serviced rather than consumed. An air line does the work: aim at the clean face and blow outward so the dirt leaves the weave by the route it came in. Where air is not enough, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until it runs clear will finish it. Drying is done in moving air at room temperature only — a radiator, a hot air gun or a flame ruins the cloth in seconds — and it is refitted dry, with nothing applied.
