At 1,285 cc the 1299 is the largest Superquadro Ducati ever put into production, and it marks the end point of an argument about how much work two cylinders can be made to do. An engine that size shifts a great deal of air for its cylinder count, and it does so in two very large events per cycle rather than a steady draw. Everything downstream of the intake mouth therefore matters more than it would on a smaller motor. PM127S is the woven polyester panel for it, sitting in the standard box with nothing else altered.

Volume is the variable

Restriction across a filter is not a property of the filter alone; it depends on how much air is being dragged through it. The panel that has an easy time on a 900 is working considerably harder behind 1,285 cc at full throttle, and Ducati did not fit a bigger box to compensate. More cloth area means the element sits at a smaller fraction of its capacity for any given demand, which is why the difference belongs to the top of the range rather than to pottering through a village.

For this machine Sprint Filter catalogues the ladder in full: this standard weave, a 14-micron nonwoven for dirtier air, a high-flow racing cloth, and complete competition kits on their own frames. Finer weaves hold back more and flow less; the racing one reverses both. There is no ranking hidden in that, only a trade, and for road and track use the standard element is the balanced end of it. The honest limit is that a panel slid into the standard box will not add horsepower anyone can feel.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean face outward with compressed air. When that is no longer enough, wash it in warm water with mild detergent, rinse until clear and let it dry fully in air — heat and open flame both destroy the weave, so neither goes anywhere near it.
