Six of the seven machines on this fitment list are sports bikes. The S 1000 XR is the one built to cover ground in long stretches, and it is therefore the one that reaches its service intervals soonest. That counts for more than it sounds: a washable element never pays for itself in a single moment, it pays in repetitions. Every interval that passes without a panel being bought is one repetition, and this machine gathers them faster than anything else on the PM93S list.
Key Features
- Woven polyester run dry from new, with no oil applied at any point
- Rated at 80 µm and 5,050 l/m²/sec, the road and track specification of the range
- Held back 93.13 % of 100-micron particles under test, where four-layer oiled cotton managed 76.42 %
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of a typical performance element, in the original panel format
- Fits the standard airbox as it stands: box, ducting and factory fuelling all left alone
- Serviced and put back rather than bought again, with two years of guarantee from purchase
Why distance changes the arithmetic
A sports bike ridden on a few dry weekends can take years to reach a mileage service. A machine used for distance takes a summer. Across the same span of ownership the element therefore comes out, gets cleaned and goes back in several times over — each occasion one the other motorcycles on the list will not have had. That is where the worth of a serviced rather than replaced filter is built: slow and slight on a garage queen, useful here.
What it changes on a loaded motorcycle
Not the thing people hope for: an element dropped into an unmodified airbox does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, loaded or empty. What changes is the shape of the curve between services. A paper panel begins at its best and moves in one direction only, and nobody measures the state it had reached on the day it went in the bin. A washed polyester element is returned to a condition that can be seen and repeated, so the resistance the engine works against is a known quantity for the whole interval.
Care and cleaning
The PM93S is cleaned with an air line held to the clean face and worked outward, so the dust leaves by the route it entered. Long days occasionally leave more than air will take, and then it is lukewarm water and a mild washing-up detergent, rinsed until the water comes through clean. After that it wants nothing but time and moving air: no hot-air gun, no radiator, no flame, since heat finishes a polyester element sooner than dirt does. It is refitted dry and left untreated, and the maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the airbox of the BMW S 1000 XR built from 2015 to 2019. The XR from 2020 is a different motorcycle beneath the same name and takes a different part number, as does the S 1000 RR from 2019; this element belongs to the earlier generation of both. Seven machines share it: the S 1000 XR, the S 1000 RR of 2009 to 2012 and of 2010 to 2018, the S 1000 RR HP4, the HP4 Race in both listed windows and the Bimota BB3.
