Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 62.8 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 70 N/mm
  • Free length 125 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00281-15

How Öhlins Makes Them

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 125 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 70 N/mm.

Choosing 70 N/mm

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

Installation

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
