DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06411-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 255 mm long with a 63.5 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 63.5 mm
  • Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
  • Free length 255 mm
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 06411-09
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 145 mm of usable stroke

Why the Rate Holds

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 63.5 mm × 255 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 50 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Installation

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
