DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 104 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01096-09
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 190 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 50 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Fitting

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
