DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60580-08 is a shock absorber spring rated at 48 N/mm, 250 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 250 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60580-08
  • Measured spring rate 48 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.

The Numbers That Matter

At 250 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

What Fitting Involves

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
