DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00180-94 is a shock absorber spring rated at 41 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 41 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- 105 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 00180-94
- Free length 200 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
Why the Rate Holds
Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.
The Numbers That Matter
The 46 mm bore and 200 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 41 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Where This Rate Belongs
Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.
Installation
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
