DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66422-038 is a shock absorber spring rated at 38 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 38 N/mm
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Öhlins part number 66422-038

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 38 N/mm

This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Installation

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
