DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 38 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 114 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 38 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00180-31

Why the Rate Holds

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

Installation

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
