DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 36 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 230 mm
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 06310-02
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 36 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 230 mm, inner diameter 61 mm, rate 36 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

What Fitting Involves

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
