DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21063-84 is a shock absorber spring rated at 350 N/mm, 130 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • 42 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 21063-84
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 130 mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Measured spring rate 350 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

The Numbers That Matter

The 51 mm bore and 130 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 350 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
