DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 05174-07 is a shock absorber spring rated at 30 N/mm, 370 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 05174-07
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 30 N/mm
  • 213 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 370 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 370 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 30 N/mm.

Choosing 30 N/mm

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

Installation

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
