DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60016-69 is a shock absorber spring rated at 170 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 170 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 60016-69
  • Free length 170 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Size and Rate

Free length 170 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 170 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Fitting

Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
