DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21040-54 is a shock absorber spring rated at 140 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 69 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 140 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21040-54
  • Free length 160 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 51 mm × 160 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 140 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

What Fitting Involves

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
