DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61096-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Öhlins part number 61096-34
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 190 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 100 N/mm.

Choosing 100 N/mm

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

Installation

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
