DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21103-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 21103-34
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 180 mm
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 180 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 100 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
