DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01095-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 180 mm
  • 86 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 01095-34

Manufacture and Tolerance

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Size and Rate

Free length 180 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 100 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
