ls2-ff902-scope-ii-duria-black-red-helmet
LS2 FF902 Scope II Duria Black Red – Modular Touring Helmet ECE 22.06 P/J

The Duria pattern again, this time laid over a dark matt base with red running through it. Removing the white changes the whole balance: the angular blocks stop being panels of colour and become shadow and light, and the helmet reads as one dark mass with a line of red through it rather than as a three-part graphic.

Three shells for seven sizes

Seven sizes, three shells, and the break points are worth knowing before you order: XS and S share the smallest, M and L the middle, XL through 3XL the largest. If you sit at the top of a shell group — an S or an L or a 3XL — the helmet will feel closest to its intended fit, because that size is the one the shell was drawn around. It is a small thing, and it is exactly the sort of detail that decides between two sizes when you are between them.

About the Duria Black Red graphic

Matt is what makes this one work and also what makes it demanding. Without a gloss coat there are no highlights to describe the shape of the shell, so the graphic itself has to do that job — which is why the blocks here are placed to follow the curve over the brow and along the flank rather than cutting across it. The red is a saturated, non-metallic tone chosen to stay sharp against a matt ground; a metallic red would go muddy the moment the sun went behind a cloud. In daily use it is the most forgiving of the graphics: matt hides the scuffs that a modular collects around the chin bar, and a dark base hides road film until wash day. The honest trade is conspicuity — a mostly dark helmet is harder to see at dusk, and the reflective stickers in the box are worth using rather than leaving in the bag.

HPTT: what the shell actually is

HPTT ages differently from a composite, and that is worth knowing when you decide how long to keep a helmet. Ultraviolet and heat are what degrade a polymer shell, not impacts you never had. Keep the helmet out of a sunny window and out of a hot car boot in summer, and the five-year replacement guidance is conservative. Store it on a parcel shelf all season and it is not.

Ninety degrees, not one hundred and eighty

The redesigned latch is the substantive change on this generation, and it is easy to feel. A modular chin bar has to do two contradictory things: come open with one gloved thumb, and stay shut under an impact that would tear a weak catch off its mounting. ECE 22.06 tests the second of those far harder than the old standard did, which is why the mechanism on a 22.06 modular is not simply carried over from a 22.05 one.

What ECE 22.06 and the P/J label actually mean

ECE 22.06 has been compulsory for new helmets sold in the EU since January 2024, and it is the reason 22.05 stock vanished from shelves so abruptly. The substantive changes: up to eighteen impact points rather than five, more than one impact speed, an oblique rotational test, and accessories tested as fitted rather than removed.

On this helmet it comes with a dual P/J approval. That is the modular rider's specification: P for the closed helmet with chin impacts, J for the open one. Both were tested. It is not universal — plenty of flip-ups carry P alone — and it is the difference between an approved open position and an ambiguous one.

Where it sits — and what SHARP actually tested

Price ladder first. This is the cheapest flip-up we stock, and the honest way to read the table is by column rather than by row: shell material changes, weight changes, price changes. The equipment column would be identical for every flip-up in it, which is why it is not shown.

Now the awkward one. Search for a SHARP rating and you will find FF902 Scope, three stars. Check the entry: May 2022, ECE 22.05, 1.65 kg, six sizes. The Scope II is 22.06, 1750 g and seven sizes on three shells, with a chin-bar latch redesigned for the newer standard. It is the Glamster problem in miniature — same name, different helmet — and the stars are not transferable.

Model

Type

Shell

Weight

RRP

FF820 Rapid III

Full-face

HPTT

1350 g

from 99 €

FF902 Scope II

Flip-up (P/J)

HPTT

1750 g

from 179 €

FF906 Advant

Flip-up (P/J)

KPA

1750 g

from 299 €

FF901 Advant X

Flip-up (P/J)

HPFC

1600 g

from 399 €

FF901 Advant X Carbon

Flip-up (P/J)

Carbon 6K

1550 g

from 469 €

COOLMAX, and where the air goes

COOLMAX is a fibre with grooves running along its length. Those grooves move liquid by capillary action, so sweat is pulled away from the skin and spread thin enough to evaporate rather than sitting in the foam. It is the same principle as technical base-layer clothing and it works for the same reason. In a helmet, the payoff is a liner that dries between rides.

The ventilation feeding it runs from chin and front intakes through channels moulded into the multi-density EPS to a rear exhaust port. The comfort liner over that is laser-cut, hypoallergenic, removable and washable — and it is a spare part rather than a reason to replace the helmet when it eventually packs down.

The visor, the sun visor and the Pinlock in the box

Worth knowing about the sun visor before you buy a spare: the part fitted here is shared across a group of LS2 models, so the same drop-down shade serves the FF325, FF313, several OF-series open-face helmets and this one. That is good news for availability — a shared part stays in production far longer than a model-specific one — and it is why the replacement is listed by its own number rather than by helmet name.

Getting the helmet off a fallen rider

A micrometric ratchet takes about one second to close correctly, and that is the whole argument for it. Double-D rings are marginally more secure and considerably more annoying, which means they get done up loosely on the rides where you are already late. The buckle here is set once to your neck and clicks to the same tension every time after that.

1750 grams, noise, and the rest of the honest list

1750 grams, ±50, on a mid-size shell with nothing fitted. It is the honest cost of a polymer shell plus a chin bar that opens, and it is the first thing to weigh against the price. Beyond that: no SHARP rating for this generation, a Pinlock 70 rather than the higher-transmission XLT, and a chin bar that stops at ninety degrees rather than folding away behind the head.

On wind noise we have no measurement to offer and will not manufacture one.
