DescriptionThe whole story▼

A disc change on the Yamaha Niken means taking out two front wheels instead of one, and it pays to make the most of the job while they are out. Accossato's DKS073 is a floating front disc listed for the Niken from 2018 to 2021. It is 298 mm across and 5 mm thick with a 132 mm centre bore, and its black carrier is secured by five bolts in 8.5 mm holes arranged on a 150 mm circle, figures you can check against the disc you remove.

Key Features

  • Floating front disc for the Yamaha Niken (MXT 850), 2018 to 2021
  • 298 mm outside diameter, 132 mm bore, 5 mm thick
  • Five 8.5 mm holes on a 150 mm hole circle
  • Black carrier, riveted ring
  • Interchangeable with the original disc, says the supplier
  • Minimum working thickness printed on the disc
  • One disc per purchase; one is fitted to each front wheel
  • No German ABE documented, for track use

Construction and Material Quality

The DKS073 has a black carrier that bolts to the wheel and a friction ring riveted to it with a small amount of play. That float lets the ring expand as it heats and align itself between the pads. The supplier says the disc can directly replace the original equipment part. According to Accossato, the tolerances at the joint between ring and carrier were studied in depth, drawing on the company's racing experience in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3. The minimum working thickness is printed on the ring, so the wear limit is never a matter of guesswork.

While the Wheels Are Out

With each front wheel of the Niken off the bike, the bearings are easy to check. Turn the inner race with a finger: it should rotate smoothly and quietly, without roughness, notches or play. Worn bearings let the wheel wobble slightly in the caliper and can feel like a warped disc at the lever. Look at the rims for dents or cracks, check the tyres for wear and damage, and clean the hub faces where the discs sit, because dirt there tilts a new disc. Inspect the calipers for leaking seals and the pads for wear. When the wheels go back in, follow Yamaha's sequence and torque figures for axles and pinch bolts, and pump the brake lever until the pads are back against the discs before riding off. On a machine with two front wheels, doing all of this in one session saves getting the tools out twice.

Fitment and Compatibility

For the Niken, model code MXT 850, the DKS073 is listed from 2018 to 2021. Each front wheel carries one disc, so the Niken takes two DKS073s, priced separately. The DK077 from Accossato's Elite line is the other disc listed for this bike, in the same size.

Road Approval

The DKS073 comes without a German ABE, and no type approval is on record; it belongs on the track.

Scope of Delivery

One DKS073 floating disc with black carrier. The Niken takes two.
