DescriptionThe whole story▼
Cross-country racing is hard on the rear brake of a Yamaha YZ250X. The disc sits low on the rear hub, within reach of every rock, root and log the bike rides over, and because a two-stroke does little to slow itself when the throttle closes, the right foot stays busy for the whole race. Accossato's DK168 is a fixed, one-piece rear disc listed for the YZ250X from 2017 to 2023. The supplier calls it steel-made, gives it a diameter of 245 mm and a thickness of 4 mm, and describes it as interchangeable with the original.
Key Features
- Fixed rear brake disc for the Yamaha YZ250X, 2017 to 2023
- One piece, steel-made according to the supplier
- 245 mm outer diameter, 115.2 mm centre opening
- 4 mm thick when new
- Six 6.2 mm fixing holes on a 133 mm circle
- Interchangeable with the original rear disc
- Minimum working thickness marked on the disc
- No German ABE on file; for off-road competition
Construction and Material Quality
With no rivets and no separate carrier, the DK168 is a single part: friction band and mounting flange come from the same piece, steel according to the supplier. Six 6.2 mm holes on a 133 mm circle take the fixing bolts, around a centre opening of 115.2 mm. Accossato states that the disc can take the place of the one Yamaha fits in the factory. The company, whose off-road story includes an Enduro world title in 1985, says it now designs its discs with what it has learned in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3 and picks their raw material with care. The minimum working thickness is marked on the disc itself, so a quick check with a micrometer tells you how much life is left.
What Collects Behind the Guard
Many riders who race a YZ250X in the woods fit a guard around the rear disc, and it earns its place against rocks and branches. It also creates a pocket. Mud, grass, twigs and small stones find their way into the space between guard and disc, and after a wet race they can dry there into a hard crust. Some of that material ends up in the pad track and scores the friction surface; a single stone jammed against the disc can cut a groove within one lap. So when the rear wheel comes out, look inside the guard as well as at the disc. Knock out whatever has packed in, check that the guard is straight and sits clear, and run a fingertip across both faces of the disc to feel for grooves. After fitting a new DK168, spin the wheel by hand and listen. A quiet rotation with only light pad contact is what you want. A scraping note usually means something touches, and that is better discovered on the stand than halfway through a race.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK168 for the YZ250X from 2017 to 2023, in place of the original rear disc. The 2016 model, which the same list includes for the fixed DK268 front disc, is not named for this one. For the front wheel of the YZ250X, Accossato offers two discs: the DK268 from 2016 to 2023 and the floating DK269 from 2017 to 2023. Tighten the disc bolts to the value in Yamaha's manual and pump the pedal until it feels firm before the first ride.
Road Approval
No German ABE and no type approval are documented for the DK168. It is intended for closed-course off-road racing, which is what the YZ250X was built for.
