DescriptionThe whole story▼
Plenty of Monster 821 Dark owners ride to work, and on the way to work the clutch does more than anything else on the bike. Every red light, every queue at a junction and every crawl past roadworks asks the left hand to pull, hold and let go again. The Accossato ESD082 replaces the original clutch lever of the Dark from 2014 to 2019. Its distance to the grip can be brought in, the blade comes in three lengths, and the whole lever is machined from aluminium and anodised.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Monster 821 Dark, mounting on the original clutch mounting
- Reach to the grip adjustable near the pivot
- Three blade lengths; the standard one measures about 138 mm
- Machined on CNC equipment from aluminium, then anodised
- Black hub combined with a blade in one of seven colours
- Rigid lever without a folding joint
- Each lever packed in its own Accossato box
- No documented German ABE; sold for the track
Construction and Material Quality
The ESD082 is cut from aluminium by CNC machines rather than cast in a mould, so its profile is the same from one lever to the next. After machining it is anodised in two tones: the hub in black, the blade in the colour you select. The hub carries the pivot bore and the adjuster, the blade runs from there to the tip as one continuous part. Nothing is bolted on, and there is no hinge that could start to rattle after a few thousand stops.
Traffic Lights and Queues
In town the clutch is rarely pulled once and released. You hold it at a red light, feed it out a fraction as the queue creeps forward, catch it again, and repeat that dozens of times on a single commute. Most of that work happens around the friction point, and the friction point is easier to hold when the blade meets your fingers without the hand opening wide first. Bringing the lever closer to the grip does exactly that. Many riders then use two fingers for the slow stuff and keep the other two wrapped around the left grip, so the hand stays anchored to the bar while the bike crawls.
Length plays its part as well. The further out along the blade your fingers pull, the more leverage they have, which is why a long blade asks for less effort than a short one. On a Monster 821 Dark that mostly lives in traffic, the standard or long version is the comfortable choice; blue, green, orange and gold are made in both. The short blade suits riders who value a compact look and accept a firmer pull in return.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the ESD082 for the Monster 821 Dark from 2014 to 2019. Its list shows the Dark in two versions, 2014 to 2017 and 2018 to 2019, and both use this clutch lever. It replaces the original lever on the clutch mounting of the Dark. For the front brake of the same bike, Accossato offers the EDB012.
Road Approval
There is no documented German ABE for the ESD082. We therefore sell it for use on the race track.
