Read this housing's four listings in price order and you will get the media ranking wrong. The fine dust element is the cheapest of the four, a little under two thirds of the standard P08, while the racing cloth sits well above both and the WorldSBK assembly above that again. Price here follows tooling, material and the volume a part sells in, not the fineness of what it filters with. The P14 is at once the finest medium catalogued for the CBR1000RR-R and the least expensive, and neither fact is a reason to buy it.
Key Features
- Dry nonwoven at 14 µm, rated 1,800 l/m²/sec: the finest medium listed for this airbox
- Retention bought with flow — roughly a third of the standard element's rating through the same housing
- Holds its load through the depth of the mat rather than on a single face
- No oil at any stage; compressed air is the entire maintenance kit
- Series airbox and series mapping, nothing cut and nothing repositioned
- Washable, two years of guarantee, specified for the life of the machine
A price list is not a ranking
Sprint Filter does not explain its pricing and this description will not invent one. What can be said is that the order in the list plainly does not follow the order in the media table: 14 µm is the finest thing available for this housing and also the cheapest, which is enough to show fineness is not what is being charged for. So read the specification instead. Each medium states an aperture and a flow rate, and the two always move against each other — more retention, less air — so there is no rung to climb here, only a position to choose.
When a Fireblade wants the dust medium
When you can name the dusty weeks in your riding year. Gravel paddocks, unswept back roads in a dry summer, long transport stages behind lorries: that is the air a 14 µm mat is written for, and there the flow given up is capacity nobody was using. If no such week comes to mind, the standard P08 is the better-matched element and the lower price of this one should not change that. There is no performance argument to fall back on either — an insert filter does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, and a finer one hands capacity back instead of adding any.
Care and cleaning
The PM177P14 is maintained by taking things off it. An air line at the clean face, directed outward, walks the load back out the way it came in. Where a dusty spell leaves more than air will move, lukewarm water with a mild washing-up detergent finishes it; rinse until the run-off is colourless and then leave it in moving air until dry through. Keep every heat source away — radiators, hot air guns, flame — since heat distorts the material and a distorted element stops sealing before it stops looking usable. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the Honda CBR1000RR-R of model years 2020 to 2026, one machine on the fitment list. The same airbox is catalogued with three other media, the standard P08, the P08 F1-85 racing cloth and the carbon-framed WorldSBK assembly. The Fitment tab has the detail.
