Filtration has no gauge. Oil pressure has a warning light, tyres have a sensor, brake pads have a groove to look into; the air side offers the rider nothing. Dust that slips past an element leaves no mark on the engine it is quietly wearing out, and the only place the failure ever registers is in the oil — then only if somebody sends a sample away, which almost nobody does with a motorcycle. On a machine bought to cover very large distances under a maintenance plan, that absence of evidence is the whole argument for a finer medium.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special non-woven with a filtration rating of 14 microns
- Flow rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, roughly a third of the standard element's 5,050
- Carries no oil at any stage, so the sensors downstream stay out of the equation
- Approximately double the filtering area of a typical performance panel
- Drops into the series airbox in the paper panel's place, with no remap required
- Restored with compressed air instead of bought again, two years of warranty
A decision that has to be made early
Because the evidence turns up late, the reasoning has to run forwards instead of backwards. Nobody can look at an engine and work out what its intake let through last summer, and by the time a bore has anything to say on it, the mileage that caused it is history. So the medium is chosen from the routes rather than from symptoms: how much of the year goes by behind agricultural traffic, along unsealed verges, in convoy on a dry road. Where the honest answer is a fair amount of it, a 14-micron mat removes a variable nobody could have measured anyway.
What it costs to remove that variable
Air, in a stated quantity: 1,800 l/m²/sec here against 5,050 for the standard cloth, through the same area of material. That is the standing price of a finer barrier and it is charged whether the dust turns up or not, which is exactly why this is a decision about a route rather than an upgrade. Nor would it work as one. An element dropped into an untouched airbox does not make a standard R 1250 RT noticeably quicker; intake, injection and exhaust were signed off together, and a panel sits inside that work instead of around it.
Care and cleaning
A compressor is the only tool needed. The air goes on to the clean face of the PM142P14 and is worked outwards until the surface opens up again, never from the side that collected the dirt. Two or three times in the element's life it will want more, and then it is tepid water, a trace of mild detergent, and rinsing until the water carries nothing away. Drying happens in moving air and nowhere warmer: heat destroys polyester, so radiators, hot-air guns and flames are out, and the element waits until it is dry through. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1250 RT of 2019 to 2023, a direct replacement in the series airbox. Four machines are covered by this element: the 1250 R, RS and RT together with the R 1200 GS Adventure. All four appear with their model years under the Fitment tab.
