Three Inches

Seventy-six millimetres is three inches, which is why the size exists at all: a great deal of exhaust hardware, particularly anything with an American origin, is built to imperial dimensions. If a project has to meet a three-inch component, this is the tube that does it.

Wall Thickness at the Top of the Range

One and a half millimetres, back to the figure used on the twenty-eight at the other end. The reasons are opposite: the small tube needs it for stiffness, this one needs it to stop a large panel drumming and to survive being formed into a closed body.

Silencer and Box Bodies

At this diameter a 500 mm length becomes a silencer case, an expansion chamber or the outer shell of a pre-silencer box. Packed with sound-absorbing material around a perforated core, it is the volume that does the quietening in a custom system.

What it is not is a gas path. Nothing on a motorcycle needs seventy-six millimetres of open bore.

Cutting Thicker Stainless

A 1.5 mm wall at this diameter is a long cut and it will work-harden if the blade rubs rather than cuts. Use a sharp abrasive wheel, keep the feed steady, and let the material cool between passes — a blued, hardened cut edge is difficult to file and worse to weld.

Bends

Available from Spark at 30°, 45° and 90°. At 76 mm a factory mandrel bend is the only realistic route — and the price gap between a bend and a straight length is smaller than the cost of ruining two.

End Caps

Closing a seventy-six millimetre body needs a cap at each end, and the cap is the part that decides whether the finished silencer looks made or improvised. A spun stainless cap, a laser-cut disc dished in a press, or a machined ring are the three routes — in that order of appearance and in reverse order of cost.
