Half the Weight of the Original

Spark quotes 2.5 kg for the Fighter Evo and 5.3 kg for the part it replaces. That is a fraction over fifty-three per cent, and on the RT it comes off the rear right of the bike, behind the pannier mount.

An RT is never going to be a light motorcycle, and nobody buys one expecting it to be. What 2.8 kg does at that point on the chassis is make the bike easier to move at a standstill and quicker to change direction on a mountain road — the two places the RT's mass is most obvious.

What Fighter Evo Means

Fighter Evo is Spark's angular silencer profile: a flat-sided body with a cut-off outlet, the opposite of the rounded touring can BMW fits as standard. On the RT the brief was sport-touring elegance rather than track aggression, so the shape is squared off but the proportions stay in keeping with the fairing.

The heat shield is part of the look as much as the function — carbon over titanium, in the same language as the rest of the bike's trim.

Materials Chosen for Their Weight

Titanium does the structural work: the outer sleeve, the mounts and the connecting pipe. Carbon fibre does the parts that only need to hold their shape and take heat: the end cap and the shield. It is a straightforward division and the reason the article lands at 2.5 kg without feeling flimsy.

Euro 5, and What That Buys You

The Fighter Evo for the RT carries a Euro 5 homologation. The sound is deeper and sportier than standard, but it was tested and certified at that level rather than sold as a track part with a disclaimer.

For a bike that will cross borders, that is the whole point. Keep the certificate with the registration document and the silencer is simply part of the motorcycle.

Slip-On, Not a Full System

This article is the silencer and its connecting pipe. The RT's original headers and catalyst stay where they are, which is what makes the Euro 5 certificate possible and what keeps the job to an afternoon rather than a day.

It also keeps the bike reversible. The standard silencer goes back on with the same fasteners, and nothing has been cut to fit the Spark, which matters when the RT eventually changes hands.
