DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Svartpilen is a motorcycle designed to be looked at. Every visible component has been considered — the trellis, the tank cover, the tyres, the seat unit. The air filter is the opposite of all that: sealed inside a box, invisible from every angle, and the only part of the induction system whose condition changes with time. The PM200S is the version of it that stops being a maintenance item. It is a dry polyester panel, washed rather than replaced, and once fitted it asks for a few minutes of attention a year and nothing else.
Key Features
- Woven polyester used dry, so there is no dressing to apply and none to renew
- Roughly twice the filter area of other performance panels in the same standard box
- Cleaned with compressed air; the routine leaves nothing to buy and nothing to dispose of
- Straight replacement for the paper element, with no change to the airbox or the mapping
- Filtration at 80 microns, the road and track specification of the range
- Two years of warranty from purchase and a working life measured against the bike's
The one part of the intake that ages
Everything else on the induction side of this engine is metal or moulded plastic and stays as it was: the throttle body, the ducting, the box itself. Only the element accumulates. A paper panel deals with that by being discarded, which is fine as long as somebody remembers and as long as the part is still catalogued in eight years. A washable weave deals with it by being restored. On a 125 that will be kept a long while or handed on within a family, the difference is not dramatic; it is simply permanent.
What it changes and what it does not
Fitting one will not make the Svartpilen quick, and a small single of this class is limited by licence rules in most of Europe in any case. What changes is the shape of the restriction curve over time. A loading paper element climbs steadily until the next service. A dry weave sits low, and every clean returns it to where it began, so the engine breathes the same in month eleven as it did in month one. That steadiness is the whole product. It is unglamorous on a motorcycle this handsome, which seems fitting for a part nobody will ever see.
Care and cleaning
Take the panel out and blow it through with an air line held against the clean face, so the dirt exits the side it entered. Once or twice a year, or after a dusty summer, wash it in hand-warm water with a spot of household detergent, rinse it well and stand it in a draught until it is dry all the way through. Heat damages the medium, so no hairdryers, heaters or flames. Pictures of every step are in the Downloads tab. Refit it dry and leave the oil where it belongs, which is on somebody else's cotton element.
Fitment & Compatibility
This listing is the Husqvarna Svartpilen 125 of 2021 to 2023. The element is drawn to that airbox and shared with thirteen further machines from Husqvarna and KTM, from the Vitpilen 401 to the 390 Adventure; the Fitment tab names each one with its years.
