Few motorcycles are worked as hard for as little glory as the 471 cc naked twin. It is the standard A2 machine, which means a great many of them are school bikes, hire bikes and first bikes — ridden badly on purpose, in first and second gear, by people learning what a clutch does. Fleet use is a different kind of wear from touring use: low speeds, high revs, a lot of heat and no cooling airflow to speak of, and a service schedule measured in bookings rather than kilometres. The Sprint Filter P08 CM220S suits that life because it is cleaned on the bench instead of ordered from a catalogue.

The arithmetic of a bike that never stops working

One paper element is a small sum. A paper element every service, on every machine in a small fleet, for as long as the bikes stay in service, is not. A washable filter converts a recurring line on the invoice into a single purchase, and Sprint Filter designs the P08 to last the life of the motorcycle rather than a set number of intervals. The saving is not dramatic on any one day; it is simply relentless in the right direction.

Clutch work, low speed, hot air

Training and town use keep the engine busy while giving it very little help — long spells at low road speed, repeated pull-aways, the airbox drawing warm air with no ram effect at all. In that duty cycle a partly loaded element is felt in the place it is least welcome, in the pull away from a standstill, because the pressure drop across a filter climbs with flow instead of holding flat. Keeping the restriction stable between services is the whole of what this part promises, and it is worth more here than on a bike that spends its life at a steady cruise.

Care and cleaning

A compressor does the routine work: air from the clean side, directed outwards, element back in dry. When a hard term has left more than that will shift, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will lift it, followed by a rinse until the water runs clear and a full dry in open air — not with heat and not with a flame.
