A Small Bike With a Full System
Emissions rules do not scale with capacity, so a 313 cc single carries the same kind of vapour recovery hardware as a motorcycle four times its size.
Which Is the Problem
On a bike this compact the assembly is a larger proportion of the whole and there is far less room behind the engine to accommodate it.
Built With TVS
BMW developed the 310 platform with an Indian partner and builds it there. The engineering is BMW's and the price is what the arrangement makes possible.
A Reverse-Inclined Cylinder
The head is turned around so the intake faces forward and the exhaust rearward. It is an unusual layout that shortens the intake tract and keeps the bike narrow.
The Carbon Bed
It absorbs petrol vapour until it cannot. Nothing in the service schedule replaces it and on a high-mileage commuter it is often long past useful.
Fuel Where It Should Not Be
Filling past the nozzle click soaks the bed, and hard starting follows. On a bike used every day that is more than an inconvenience.
Equalising Pressure
Every litre burnt has to be replaced by air entering the tank. The supplied fitting does that without letting anything back the other way.
A Solenoid the Controller Watches
It is checked at every start. An empty connector reads as a failure rather than as a deliberate change.
Documented Removal
Photographing the routing before taking anything out makes the eventual refit considerably quicker. It takes two minutes.
A Decision, Not a Default
Nothing about a road bike is improved by removing this. It belongs on a motorcycle where the space and the weight matter more.
A Commuter That Gets Used
These bikes accumulate mileage quickly in the hands of riders who use them every day in all weather, which is exactly the duty cycle that finishes a carbon bed early. High-mileage 310s are frequently running on a canister that stopped absorbing anything years ago.
Two Hoses and a Valve
That is the electrical and mechanical extent of what is being deleted, plus the vessel that holds the carbon.
