The P14 is not a tighter version of the P08 weave. It is a different material made a different way: a nonwoven mat of fibres laid in depth, rather than a cloth with an aperture, and its 14 µm figure comes out of that thickness instead of out of a smaller opening. The distinction is not academic: it decides how the element behaves in service, how it carries what it collects, and what an owner can tell by looking at it.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven, laid in depth: 14 µm filtration at a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Never oiled, so there is no treatment to reapply and nothing to migrate into the intake tract
- The trade in one line: a finer medium retains more and passes less; the range is a line, not a ranking
- The same housing is also catalogued for the P08 weave at 80 µm and 5,050 l/m²/sec
- Slots into the series airbox in place of the paper panel — no modification, no remap
- PM171P14 is cleaned and put back rather than consumed, with two years of guarantee from purchase
Depth instead of mesh
A woven cloth works at its face. Particles are stopped where the threads cross, and as they accumulate they close those openings from the outside in. A nonwoven mat works through its section: material travels a little way in and is held at different levels within the fibres, so the capacity of the element is distributed through its thickness rather than spread across one surface. That is why a fine mat does not necessarily reach its limit quickly. It also means the loading is not something the eye can judge, so the habit learned on a paper panel — hold it to the light, decide — is the wrong instrument here, and a fixed cleaning routine takes its place.
Choosing it for this machine
Of the three motorcycles sharing this element, this one is the least obvious candidate. A litre-class four asked for everything it has, high in its range, is exactly where 1,800 l/m²/sec is felt rather than merely quoted, and on clean roads the P08 is the better choice for it. The fine medium earns its place when the surfaces are not clean: summer dust, loose grit, a gravel approach taken twice a day. And the ceiling is unchanged either way, since no element dropped into an unmodified airbox makes a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger.
Care and cleaning
An air line does the routine work, held to the clean face and worked outward so that what the mat took in comes back out the same way. Where that is not enough, lukewarm water with a mild washing-up detergent will finish it; rinse until the run-off is clear. Drying is done by open air alone, never by a heat gun, a radiator or a flame, since heat is what destroys the medium. It is refitted dry and untreated. Look under Downloads for the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Specified against the airbox of the BMW M 1000 RR built from 2021 to 2024. Three machines take this element: the M 1000 RR, the S 1000 R of 2021 to 2026 and the S 1000 RR of 2019 to 2026. Earlier S 1000 RR machines, built to 2018, use a different housing and a different part number.
