DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60480-14 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20-28 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 60480-14
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Measured spring rate 20-28 N/mm (progressive)
  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Progressively wound

How Öhlins Makes Them

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Dimensions

Free length 230 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 20-28 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

Installation

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
