DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01092-54 is a shock absorber spring rated at 140 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 140 N/mm
  • 71 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01092-54

Why the Rate Holds

The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

Size and Rate

At 170 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

Installation

Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
