DescriptionThe whole story▼
Sooner or later, a Ténéré 700 rider who leaves the tarmac comes to a halt halfway up a steep, loose climb, either by choice or because the engine stalled. Getting going again on that slope is one of the most demanding clutch exercises in adventure riding, and it is where a well-placed lever proves its worth. The Accossato ESY688 is a CNC-machined aluminium clutch lever for the Ténéré 700 from 2019 to 2024, with adjustable reach and a choice of short, standard and long blades.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Ténéré 700 (XTZ 700), 2019 to 2024
- Replaces the stock lever at the original clutch mounting
- Adjustable distance to the grip
- Three lengths, the standard one approximately 138 mm
- Black hub, blade anodised in one of seven colours
- Machined aluminium, rigid one-piece design
- Delivered in an Accossato box
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato has roots in off-road competition, and in 1985 the company won an enduro world title. The ESY688 is machined from aluminium on CNC equipment and anodised, with a black hub containing the pivot and the adjuster and a blade in the colour you choose. It is a fixed lever, without a folding joint, so the clutch engages through one solid piece. The anodised layer is formed from the aluminium itself and is not a coating that could chip away where branches or boots brush past.
Restarting on a Steep Climb
The technique for a hill restart off road is simple to describe and harder to do. Hold the bike with the rear brake rather than the front, because a locked front wheel can slide backwards on a loose surface. Pull in the clutch, start the engine, select first gear, and then let the clutch out very slowly while adding a little throttle, releasing the rear brake only as the drive takes hold. Everything happens at once, and the left hand has to find and hold the friction point while the rest of your body is busy keeping the bike upright on a slope. If the lever sits at full stretch, the fingers have little finesse left. Bring it closer so that you can hold the bite point with a relaxed grip, and consider the long blade, which lightens the pull and allows finer movements; it is made in blue, gold, green and orange. Practise on a gentle slope before you need the skill on a steep one. On the Ténéré 700 the twin is happy to move off at low revs, so the exercise rewards patience more than throttle.
Fitment and Compatibility
Covering 2019 to 2024, the ESY688 is the Accossato lever with the longer listing for the Ténéré 700. It sits at Yamaha's original clutch mounting in place of the stock part. Its brake-side partner, the EDF016, is listed for a shorter span, 2019 to 2022, so for a 2023 or 2024 Ténéré only the clutch side is covered by Accossato's list.
Road Approval
No German ABE is documented for the ESY688. The lever is therefore sold for track use.
Scope of Delivery
Accossato ships the ESY688 as one clutch lever in its own box, in the blade colour and length you selected.
