If this trade is going to be noticed anywhere in the family, it will be noticed here. The F 900 GS is the strongest and lightest of BMW's middleweight twins, the one most likely to be ridden hard and revved out, and it is being offered the finest and most restrictive medium Sprint Filter makes. Both halves of that sentence are true at the same time, and a product description that only tells you the flattering half is not worth the reading time.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special non-woven with a filtration rating of 7 microns
- Rated flow 560 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the standard P08 weave
- No oil anywhere in the element, new or after cleaning
- Straight swap for the factory panel in the unmodified airbox, with no remap
- Approximately double the filtering surface of other performance elements
- Washable and reusable, with two years of warranty from the day of purchase
The most expensive version of the same trade
Air demand rises with capacity and with revs, so the engine that asks most of an airbox is the one that pays most for a restriction in it. That is this one. Roughly a ninth of the flow remains, which on a bike ridden at the top of the rev range is the least comfortable place in the range to spend it. Where it would show is a top end that goes slightly flat under sustained full load, particularly once the mat has taken on a season of dirt — not a fault, not a warning light, simply the shape of the compromise. Nobody should buy this element in the belief that it is an upgrade over the P08. It is the strict end of the same axis.
When the strict end is the right one
The case for the PM188T12 is made by the ground, not by the engine. A 900 GS that genuinely lives on dust — dry pistes, unsealed mountain roads, a group of bikes throwing up a plume — is meeting a fine mineral fraction that an 80-micron weave will pass, and the arithmetic there favours retention over headroom you cannot use on that surface anyway. A 900 GS on tarmac with occasional gravel is a different case, and the standard P08 is the better balance for it. And whichever goes in, neither adds noticeable power to a standard machine; the intake was designed with a filter already in it.
Care and cleaning
Air first, water only if the air was not enough. Directed at the clean face, a compressor line pushes the load back out of the mat instead of further into it; a wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent follows for anything that stays, rinsed until clear. The element then dries in open air alone — no heat gun, no oven, no flame, all of which damage the medium beyond use — and it is refitted dry and unoiled. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW F 900 GS of 2023 to 2026, in the standard airbox with nothing altered around it. The same element serves eleven machines from three manufacturers, BMW's middleweight F range alongside Kove and Voge adventure models. Every listing appears in the Fitment tab.
