What Electro-Colouring Is

Stainless steel carries a thin, transparent chromium oxide layer. Grow that layer electrochemically and it starts producing interference colours — the same physics that makes titanium turn blue under heat, controlled deliberately rather than left to the exhaust gas.

The result is a colour that is part of the surface rather than a film sitting on it. There is nothing to chip, lift or blister, and no clear coat to go milky. It is a different answer from Spark's ceramic Black Series and from a titanium case that colours itself over time.

Titanium Where It Counts

Spark builds this silencer with a stainless case but keeps titanium for the fitting, and specifies that the silencer's interior is titanium too. Those are the parts nobody sees.

That construction is why Spark calls the slip-on ultralight despite the stainless outer case: 1.7 kg against a 4.3 kg standard silencer. Two and a half kilos off the tail of a Z900 is felt in how quickly the motorcycle settles between corners rather than on any scale.

Approved to the Newer Standard

The 2025 Z900 is registered to Euro5+, and a slip-on approved to the earlier Euro5 is not automatically acceptable on it. Spark developed this one for the newer machine and homologated it accordingly.

Installation is quick and needs no further modification to the motorcycle — no remap, no error lights, nothing else to buy. The carbon fibre heat shield for the connecting pipe is in the box.

Three Ways to Do Dark

Across its catalogue Spark answers the same question three ways, and this bike shows all of them. Electro-colouring works the stainless oxide layer, as here. Ceramic coating bakes a black layer onto the metal, as in the Black Series systems. And a bare titanium case colours itself over time from the heat, which is what the Grid-O version does.

Only one of those stays exactly as delivered. If a predictable, unchanging finish is what you want, this is the version — the titanium cases are the ones that keep developing.
