DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01092-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01092-36
  • 80 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 105 N/mm
  • Free length 170 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 170 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 105 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

What Fitting Involves

Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
