DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 08789-40 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4.0 N/mm, 423 mm long with a 38.2 mm inner diameter. Under braking a soft spring lets the fork run through its stroke and the geometry with it.
Key Features
- Supplied as a pair
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Free length 423 mm
- 280 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 38.2 mm
- Measured spring rate 4.0 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 08789-40
Why the Rate Holds
Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.
Dimensions
Free length 423 mm, inner diameter 38.2 mm, rate 4.0 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
What This Rate Does
If the bike rides high and feels harsh over small stuff, the rate is often the reason rather than the damping. At this rate the fork sits deep in its travel under load, which is exactly what a long-travel chassis is designed around. A rate this low belongs on a long-travel machine or under a light rider — it lets the fork use its full stroke instead of riding high and skating over the surface. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Applications
Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.
What Fitting Involves
Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
