DescriptionThe whole story▼
The belly pan has to come off. Akrapovic prints that with an exclamation mark, and it is the fact that decides whether this system suits a given motorcycle: an R3 or R25 loses part of its bodywork permanently, and there is no version of the fitment that keeps it.
Key Features
- The system fits only once the belly pan has been removed
- 3.2 kg where Yamaha's standard system weighs 8.2
- Rises to 39 PS from a standard 37.8
- 28.6 Nm, with 1.1 more measured at 8,300 rpm
- Static noise climbs from 88 dB to 100.4
- Half an hour of workshop time
- Closed course competition use only
Five Kilograms From a 300
Yamaha's standard exhaust on this machine weighs 8.2 kg. That is an extraordinary figure for a 321 cc twin, and it is the price of clearing emissions with a large converter on a bike with nowhere to hide one. The Akrapovic system weighs 3.2.
Five kilograms off a motorcycle of about 170 kg is close to three per cent of the whole, which no litre bike system in this catalogue comes near in relative terms. On a small twin that is genuinely felt.
Twelve and a Half Decibels
88 dB standard to 100.4 at 5,375 rpm. A small Yamaha twin is a quiet motorcycle from the factory, and this system moves it a long way. Track days with a 98 dB static limit will not accept it.
Read the Material Description Carefully
Akrapovic names this the Racing Line (SS) — stainless steel. Its general product description for the line mentions a carbon fibre muffler sleeve and end cap, which is boilerplate covering several material variants rather than a statement about this part number.
Where the catalogue name and the general text disagree, the part number is what ships. This one is the stainless steel version.
Three Names, One Motorcycle
Yamaha sold this platform as the MT-03 naked, the R3 sportsbike and, in some markets, the YZF-R25 with a smaller engine. The chassis and exhaust route are shared, so one system covers all three from 2014 to 2021.
Yamaha revised the R3 and MT-03 for 2022 with new bodywork. That generation takes different parts.
Thirty Minutes, Once the Bodywork Is Off
The quoted fitting time is half an hour, which is quick for a complete system and reflects how little there is on a small twin. It does not include removing the belly pan, and it does not include deciding what to do about the gap that leaves.
A First Race Bike
The R3 is one of the most common machines in club racing and in track-day novice groups. A five-kilogram saving, a 39 PS peak and no road approval describe exactly that use, and nothing else.
Road Approval
None. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use.
