This is the awkward one, so it goes first. On a 1290 Super Duke R the T12 is almost never the right purchase. It is the finest material Sprint Filter makes, drawn for desert stages and for air with a visible load in it, and it asks for about a ninth of the standard weave's flow to do that job — 560 litres per square metre per second against 5,050. A hyper-naked that spends its life on sealed roads hands over that much and, in the ordinary run of things, collects nothing in return.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven polyester, 7 microns of filtration, 560 l/m²/sec of flow
- Roughly one ninth of the standard weave's rate: the deepest trade in the range
- Drawn for off-road, desert and genuinely extreme air, not for road riding
- Never oiled, so its behaviour does not depend on who serviced it last
- Direct fit in the series airbox, no modification and no remapping
- Washable and reusable, with a two-year warranty from purchase
Three cases where it still makes sense
The first is a regular route with a long unsurfaced section in it — a track to a house, a pass that never got sealed — ridden often enough that the airbox sees it weekly rather than once. The second is a fixed season of bad air with the bike in daily use: roadworks that will run for months, harvest traffic on the commute, a gritted winter that never gets rinsed away. The third is a machine shipped to and ridden in a region where mineral dust is simply what the air is made of. In those three settings, 7 microns is answering a real question and the flow is a fair price.
And the case against, plainly
Outside them, this is the wrong element for this motorcycle, and the standard weave or the 14-micron nonwoven is the purchase. None of the four changes the outcome people usually hope for: no drop-in element makes a standard motorcycle noticeably quicker, and the finest one moves the number the other way by design. What every version does offer is a restriction that starts low and is restored by cleaning rather than surrendered gradually — but a restriction that starts at 560 has surrendered a great deal before the bike has moved.
Care and cleaning
The PM190T12 is dry, so it can come out and go back in the same afternoon. Compressed air at the clean face, worked outward, returns the load through the surface that held it, and on this material that will be needed more often than on a weave. Heavier work means lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, then circulating air for as long as the mat needs. No heater, no hot-air gun, no flame at any point, and refit it dry. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the KTM 1290 Super Duke R of 2020 to 2023, in the unmodified original airbox. Three machines are listed against this code — this one, the 1290 Super Duke RR and the 1390 Super Duke R — with their year windows in the Fitment tab. The listing exists because all three share one housing, not because all three share a use.
