A motorcycle carries several filters and lets you see exactly one of them. The oil filter is a sealed canister that goes in the bin at a service without teaching anyone anything. The fuel filter sits in the tank and is thought about only when it fails. The air panel is the one an owner can take out, hold up and judge — the only place in the machine where a maintenance decision can rest on evidence instead of a schedule. That is the argument for a washable element, and PM109P14 is the fine one catalogued for this airbox.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven filtering at 14 microns, the fine medium for this housing
- Rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the standard woven panel
- Never oiled: dry going in, dry coming out, nothing to migrate onto sensors
- About double the filtering area of a typical performance element
- Direct replacement in the standard airbox, with nothing modified and no remap
- Washed and refitted rather than thrown away, two years of warranty
Evidence instead of a schedule
A paper panel takes the decision away from you. It is replaced at the stated interval whether it needed replacing or not, because there is no way to return it to a known condition and little point in studying something you are about to discard. A washable element inverts that. It has a reference state — the one it was in after the last clean — so opening the box tells you something, and the honest answer is often to put it straight back. Over the years that turns the intake from an item of faith into an item of record.
What the fine mat asks in return
Flow, and a fair amount of it: a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec where the woven medium passes 5,050 through the same frame. Finer holds more back and lets less through — one exchange with two sides, not a ranking. A finer medium also loads more quickly on the same road, which is a consequence of doing more rather than a fault. The thing it does not do at all is add power. A panel inside an unmodified airbox never has, and what changes instead is that the intake returns to a known resistance after every clean rather than drifting quietly upward until the next service.
Care and cleaning
Take the element out when you would have inspected the paper panel and start with compressed air on its clean face, working outward without hurry. The mat filters through its thickness, so anything driven in from the dirty side stays where it is least welcome. Water at hand temperature with a drop of mild detergent deals with what air will not shift, rinsed until it runs clear. Dry it in moving air only — heat guns, ovens and flames destroy the material — and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW R nineT Scrambler built from 2017 to 2020, in the series airbox. This part number has a short list: two entries, both Scramblers, this machine and the 2021 to 2024 version. The others on the same housing — the R nineT itself, the Pure and the Racer — are not among them, so the variant matters as much as the year. Both appear in the Fitment tab.
