DescriptionThe whole story▼

Twelve laps is not long, but it is long enough for a front brake to tell the truth. Somewhere around two thirds distance a rider stops thinking about the machine and simply repeats references, and the one thing that spoils that is a lever whose position keeps moving. Accossato's ZXC ceramic racing material sits on the AGPA112 plate for the front of the Benelli BN600 R, model years 2014 to 2017, and the company's summary of it is that the ceramic mix behind it was put together for racing.

Key Features

  • Front pads, Benelli BN600 R of 2014 to 2017, Accossato plate AGPA112
  • ZXC ceramic racing material, a ceramic mix the company offers for racing
  • For club racing, race weekends and track-only machines
  • The same material is listed for the rear plate of this bike
  • Two pads in the box, one caliper
  • Two boxes if the front wheel carries a caliper on each side
  • Four alternative materials exist on this plate
  • No German ABE on record; competition use

Construction and Material Quality

Ceramic is a family of materials rather than one recipe, and Accossato does not publish what goes into this one. What the company does say is that the mix was developed for racing, and it builds the material onto the same AGPA112 plate that carries its road pads, so nothing about the installation changes when you swap. What matters more than the recipe is where the article belongs: on a bike warmed up before it is used hard, ridden in sessions rather than in traffic, and looked at between them.

Reading the Lever Late in a Race

Riders discuss pads in terms of feel rather than figures, and what they mean is the relationship between how hard they pull and how quickly the bike slows. Early in a race the lever comes back to a point you know. If the same pull starts bringing it nearer the bar as laps go by, every reference you have learned turns into an approximation, and a circuit punishes an approximation with a trip through the gravel, so you back off. That is why a race material is judged by what it does on the eleventh lap rather than the first, and why quick riders bother to notice it at all.

On a BN600 R prepared for club events the front end does most of the work and deserves most of the attention. Look at what is left of the pads after each race rather than after the meeting, and keep a fresh pair in the van. Before the bike goes out, make sure the disc faces are clean and that nothing was sprayed onto them while the chain was being adjusted. Put some heat into a new set during practice so that it is not being asked for its first proper stop at the first corner of a race. Pads go in pairs, and a lever pumped up on the stand saves an unpleasant discovery at pit exit.

Fitment and Compatibility

Fitment for the AGPA112 plate runs from 2014 to 2017 at the front of this model. The AGPA42 pad at the back, catalogued from 2012 to 2017, is available in the same ceramic material, so a machine run at club level can carry matching materials at both ends. Accossato's disc list for the BN600 R holds the DKS032. Two road materials and two further competition materials complete what the company offers on the front plate.

Road Approval

Our papers for this article contain no German ABE and no test certificate, which puts the set firmly in the racing and competition column.

Scope of Delivery
