DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Scrambler 800 runs an air-cooled twin, and air cooling puts more responsibility on the oil than a water jacket does. Nothing dramatic follows from that, but it does make the level worth knowing on a bike ridden through a hot August or left standing for weeks between trips. Since the check begins and ends at the filler, there is a case for a cap that is pleasant to use and looks like something. Accossato's FP004 is machined from aluminium, has an M20x2.5 thread and comes in eight anodised colours.

Key Features

  • Oil filler cap for the Ducati Scrambler 800, 2015 to 2018
  • M20x2.5 thread, as quoted by Accossato
  • Aluminium, CNC-machined, anodised finish
  • Eight colours: blue, green, black, orange, red, silver, titanium, gold
  • Usable on other motorcycles with the same filler size
  • TS003 and TS012 brake reservoir caps listed for this bike
  • No German ABE on file; offered for competition use

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato machines the FP004 from aluminium and anodises it, which is how eight colours become available without a drop of paint: blue, green, black, orange, red, silver, titanium and gold. The single dimension the maker publishes is the thread, M20x2.5, because that is what determines whether the cap belongs on a given engine; alongside its own application list, Accossato notes that motorcycles with the same filler size elsewhere can use it too. On a Scrambler 800, where the engine sits in plain view and much of the bike is deliberately plain, the filler is one of the few places where a colour can be added without redesigning anything.

An Air-Cooled Twin and Its Oil

Check the level with the engine cold, which for most people means before the first ride of the day rather than after the last one. Put the Scrambler 800 in the position the owner's manual describes and read the level there; the handbook is specific about this for a reason, and a bike propped on its side stand will tell you a comfortable lie. Clean the area around the filler before opening it, because grit sitting on the casing is looking for a way in and the cap is its only opportunity. Check the thread and the sealing face on both parts and wipe them if needed. Top up in small amounts with the grade named in the manual, checking between each addition rather than after the fact. The FP004 goes back in by hand until it seats, no further, and hand pressure really is the whole requirement. After the next ride, look at the casing below the filler: it should be dry, and if it is not, the cause is worth finding straight away.

Fitment and Compatibility

For the Scrambler 800, Accossato lists the FP004 from 2015 to 2018. Fit depends on the M20x2.5 thread, so other machines with that filler size can take the same cap, and our catalogue shows it for the Monster 821, the Hypermotard 939 and the Diavel Carbon. Where the engine cover has been replaced, measure the thread before ordering rather than assuming. Accossato also makes the TS003 for the front brake reservoir of this bike and the TS012 for the rear, so one colour can appear at three points on the machine.

Road Approval

No German ABE and no test marking for the FP004 have been supplied to us, and the cap is consequently listed for racing and competition.
