DescriptionThe whole story▼
A dry, hard-packed track on a hot afternoon turns a 450 into a handful. The Suzuki RM-Z450 makes more torque than the rear tyre can use on a slick surface, and much of the job of finding grip moves to the rider's left hand: easing the drive in, slipping the clutch through the turn, releasing it fully only once the tyre is ready. Accossato's C7220 is the folding clutch lever for that hand on the RM-Z450 from 2005 to 2020, CNC-machined in Italy from Ergal 7075 and long enough for four fingers.
Key Features
- Folding clutch lever for the Suzuki RM-Z450, 2005 to 2020
- Fits the original clutch perch in place of the stock lever
- Long blade, laid out for four fingers
- Anti-break joint allows the blade to fold forward in a fall
- CNC-machined from solid Ergal 7075, made in Italy
- Black, gold or green blade on a dark base
- Single lever in the box
- No German ABE on record; for motocross and off-road competition
Construction and Material Quality
The left lever of a 450 does a lot of work, so the material matters. Accossato cuts the C7220 from solid Ergal 7075, an alloy prized for its strength, with the aim of a lever that is strong, low in weight and reliable; the milling is done in Italy. It is made of two pieces. A base with a dark finish holds the pivot on the original perch, and a blade in black, gold or green is fixed to it through a hinge, so it can fold away. That blade is longer than on Accossato's brake levers and offers space for four fingers.
Hard-Pack and a Handful of Torque
On soft ground a big four-stroke finds grip almost anywhere. On hard, polished clay it does not, and riders change their technique. Many use a gear higher than usual out of slow corners, let the engine pull from low down, and feed the drive in with the clutch rather than letting the full torque reach the rear tyre at once. On the RM-Z450 that means the lever spends a good part of each lap partly pulled, with the fingers holding it near the point where the clutch begins to bite while the rear tyre searches for grip. Some riders find that a long blade with four fingers on it gives steadier control over that point, especially late in a moto when the forearms are tight.
Hard-pack punishes errors quickly. Let the clutch out too sharply mid-corner and the rear steps sideways; catch it too late and the RM-Z450 is already down, sliding across a surface with no give in it. When the bike falls to the left, the clutch lever usually bears the brunt. The joint on the C7220 allows the blade to fold forward instead of snapping against the hard ground, so there is a chance to lift the bike, restart and continue with a clutch that still works. It is a chance rather than a certainty, and a fall onto a hard edge can still break it, but on a surface this unforgiving every chance counts.
Fitment and Compatibility
In Accossato's list, the C7220 is given for the Suzuki RM-Z450 of 2005 to 2020, mounted in place of the original lever at the stock clutch perch. The matching folding brake lever for the right side is the B8262, listed across the same years. Both are available in black, gold and green; the B8262 adds a blue option that the clutch lever does not have.
Road Approval
No German ABE is on record for the C7220. The RM-Z450 is a motocross machine, and this lever is likewise meant for the track and off-road competition.
