Helmets · The fit guide

Find your size, full-face

A full-face helmet only protects you if it actually fits. Measure right, read the chart, know your head shape — and learn the 60-second test that tells you it's the one.

A loose helmet is an empty promise.

Why it matters

A loose helmet is an empty promise.

A helmet is engineered to stay exactly where it sits and spread a crash across the whole shell. Half a size too big and it shifts, rotates or lifts at the worst possible moment — and all that expensive technology never gets the chance to work. The most important thing about any helmet isn't the brand or the graphics. It's that it fits.

Start with a tape measure.

Step one

Start with a tape measure.

Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of your head — about 2.5 cm (one inch) above your eyebrows and level all the way around. Keep it snug, not tight, and measure twice; if the readings differ, trust the larger one. That number in centimetres is your starting point — everything else just refines it.

Your head has a shape.

Not just size — shape

Your head has a shape.

Two riders with the same head size can need different helmets. Heads come in three broad shapes — round oval, intermediate oval and long oval — and a helmet's interior is moulded to one of them. Most are built for the intermediate oval, the most common shape. Get the circumference right but the shape wrong and you'll feel it: pressure on the forehead, or gaps at the sides. The right shape simply disappears on your head.

Try it on properly

The 60-second fit test.

01

Cheeks & crown

Pads should hug your cheeks and the crown should touch all around — snug, never painful, no pressure points.

02

The gap check

You shouldn't fit more than one finger between your forehead and the liner.

03

The twist & roll

Hold the chin bar and move it — your skin should move with the helmet. With the strap done up, it must not roll forward off your head.

04

The 20-minute rule

Wear it 15–20 minutes. A hot spot that grows into a headache means it's the wrong size or shape.

New should feel almost too tight.

Don't size up

New should feel almost too tight.

The comfort padding compresses 15–20% in the first few rides, so a helmet that's perfect out of the box will loosen into a hot mess within a month. If you're between two sizes, take the smaller one. Snug is safe; roomy is a helmet that's already halfway off. On many models you can also swap thicker or thinner cheek pads to dial the fit in.

The verdict

Get the size right, and the rest follows.

Measure your head, take the snug size, know your shape, and run the 60-second test. Do that, and any good full-face helmet becomes the safest thing you own.
