Every fine filter medium is sold with a caveat about flow, and the caveat is real: 1,800 l/m²/sec is a smaller figure than the standard element's. What is rarely said is when that figure is actually charged. An engine draws its peak airflow near its peak revs, and Triumph built the Bonneville Bobber's 1200 twin for the other end of the range — a high-torque tune that does its work low down and has the rider changing up long before the flow rating begins to bite. On this machine the usual objection to a dust medium is close to free, which makes the SM225P14 an unusually simple decision. It can be taken on filtration alone.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven media, rated at 14 µm, listed for demanding and dusty conditions
- 1,800 l/m²/sec, a rate an engine only calls on in the top of its rev range
- Completely dry — no oil to be drawn onto the air sensor or the throttle bodies
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance filters, in the standard airbox
- Takes the place of the paper panel with nothing cut, adapted or remapped
- Cleaned and returned to service instead of replaced; designed for the life of the motorcycle
Where the flow figure is charged
Airflow demand rises with engine speed. A restriction that a high-revving four would meet on every fast road is met by this twin only at revs it was not tuned to spend time at, and most Bobber riders never take it there because the engine rewards the opposite. So the cost side of a finer medium is paid, on this bike, in a corner of the rev range that is barely used — while the gain in retention is collected on every kilometre. A finer medium always holds back more and lets less through — the two never move apart, in any medium in the range — so this is a trade and not a ranking. That is why it reads so differently here than it does on a sports machine.
What you are actually buying
Not power. A drop-in element does not make a series Bonneville noticeably quicker, and nobody should expect it to. What changes is that the intake resistance starts lower and, more importantly, returns to the same value every time the element is cleaned, instead of climbing steadily until somebody buys a new panel. The second change is that the buying stops: this is the last air filter the bike needs, and it carries two years of warranty from the date of purchase.
Care and cleaning
The SM225P14 is serviced with compressed air on the clean side, blown outwards so the dust leaves the way it arrived. After a dusty summer, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it in open air only — no heat gun, no flame — and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Bonneville Bobber built from 2017 to 2021. The same element also serves the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster of 2018 to 2021, which shares the airbox — two machines on one part number. Check your model year in the Fitment tab.
