Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 270 mm and the inner diameter at 23.5 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 6.5 N/mm

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
