Nolan X-804 UC Cosmic Mirror Blue Visor – Track Use Only

The Cosmic visors sit at the top of the X-804 range, and what you pay the difference for is the coating. Nolan builds these with a multi-layer film stack rather than the single coloured layer used on the iridium versions.

What stacking layers actually does

Several very thin films, laid down at controlled thicknesses, interfere with each other optically. The colour that comes back is not a pigment — it is the result of different wavelengths reflecting off different layers and reinforcing or cancelling one another. Two consequences follow. The effect has depth and shifts with angle in a way a single layer cannot reproduce. And a stack can be tuned to reject a broader slice of the spectrum, so glare control under a hard sun is spread more evenly instead of being concentrated in one band. It is the principle behind camera lens coatings, applied to a helmet.

The blue specifically

This is the colder of the two Cosmic finishes. The stack skews toward the short end of the spectrum, stripping out low-sun yellow and the glare that bounces up off wet tarmac, while the layered construction keeps it from collapsing to a flat grey when the sun goes behind cloud — the failure mode of a strongly tinted single layer. Over exposed carbon it reads near-black at a shallow angle and electric head-on.

Not homologated for road use in Europe. Race tracks and private circuits, in good light, only.

Lens, fitting, care

The lens under the stack is the ordinary X-804 part — Italian Lexan polycarbonate, flat Ultrawide geometry, scratch treatment, Pinlock posts fitted, hand-change, one size for all four shells. A multi-layer coating is the most delicate surface in the range: water and patience, never a dry cloth.
