DescriptionThe whole story▼
Few motorcycles get modified as consistently as the MT-07, and almost none of those modifications touch the engine. Owners change what they touch and what they look at, which puts the ignition barrel high on the list: a black plastic cylinder sitting in the middle of a cockpit Yamaha otherwise kept deliberately bare.
Key Features
- Fits the Yamaha MT-07 from 2014 to 2020
- Barrel, lock and key come off the motorcycle for good
- Drops roughly 350 g from the fork crown
- Choice of black, blue or titanium anodising
- Ergal billet body with a sealed IP69K button
- Key Box supplied, so the transponder circuit is unaffected
Why the Immobiliser Still Works Afterwards
Yamaha reads a chip in the key head through a coil wrapped around the barrel. Take the barrel out on its own and the bike is dead. The Key Box is the answer to that and it is not a workaround: the original key goes inside the housing, the housing plugs into the same antenna, and the electronics see precisely what they saw before. Nothing is cloned, emulated or defeated — the security system is simply somewhere else.
A Note on the Blue
Yamaha's Icon Blue is one of the few factory colours the aftermarket bothers matching, and JP KS YA003 B is anodised to sit alongside it. Titanium (JP KS YA003 T) suits the grey and Storm Fluo schemes; black (JP KS YA003) is for owners who would rather not notice the part at all.
Reversibility Matters on a Used Bike
MT-07s change hands often. Because this swap cuts nothing and solders nothing, the standard ignition block can go back on before a sale with no evidence it was ever removed — which is worth more on a bike in this class than the 350 g, and worth remembering before deciding the original parts can be thrown away.
Fitment and Compatibility
- Yamaha MT-07 (2014–2020)
Road Approval
None. The lock is part of the motorcycle's type approval, so a road-registered MT-07 fitted with this switch no longer complies. Sold for closed-circuit and competition use.
