DescriptionThe whole story▼

Few road motorcycles have spent as much time at the drag strip as the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. Its long wheelbase and strong four-cylinder engine made it a favourite of straight-line racers almost from its arrival in 1999, and in that world a good run begins with the left hand. The Accossato ESS014 is a clutch lever for both generations of the Hayabusa, listed from 1999 to 2020. It is machined from aluminium, anodised in a choice of seven colours and adjustable for its distance from the grip, and it attaches at the original clutch mounting.

Key Features

  • Clutch lever for the GSX1300R Hayabusa, first and second generation, 1999 to 2020
  • Fits the original clutch mounting
  • Reach adjuster close to the pivot
  • Blade lengths: short, standard (about 138 mm) and long
  • Black hub with a blade in black, blue, red, orange, gold, silver or green
  • CNC-machined aluminium, anodised
  • Fixed blade with no hinge
  • Packed in its own Accossato box

Construction and Material Quality

The ESS014 starts as aluminium and is given its shape by CNC cutters, then anodised so that the colour is bound into the outer layer of the metal. Two tones result: a black hub containing the pivot and the adjuster, and a blade in the colour you have picked. Along the whole length of the lever there is no joint. Hub and blade form one fixed piece, so no play can develop at a hinge, and the blade comes back to the same resting point every time you let it out.

Launching in a Straight Line

A drag launch is decided in the first metres, and most of it happens at the clutch. Let the lever out too quickly and the front wheel climbs or the rear tyre spins; slip it for too long and the time is lost before the bike is properly moving. Riders who race the Hayabusa in a straight line talk about finding the same release point run after run, and that kind of repetition starts with a lever that is always in the same place and always feels the same. The adjuster lets you put the blade where your fingers can hold it steadily at the friction point on the start line. Some racers favour the short blade for a compact two-finger movement; others choose the long one, made in blue, gold, green and orange, because its extra leverage makes it less tiring to hold the lever in while waiting for the lights. Accossato knows competition from the inside: the company was founded in Moncalieri, near Turin, in 1969 as a manufacturer of competition motorcycles.

Away From the Strip

Most Hayabusas spend far more time on the road than on a drag strip, and the same adjustment pays off there. A heavy motorcycle is pulled away from rest many times on a ride through town, and a clutch lever that sits close to relaxed fingers makes each of those starts smoother.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the ESS014 for the Hayabusa in three entries: the first generation from 1999 to 2007, the second from 2008 to 2020, and the Special Edition of 2003 to 2007. On the brake side there are two Accossato levers, depending on the year: the EDF014, listed for 1999 to 2012 and 2014 to 2017, and the EDF041 for 2013 to 2020.

Road Approval

Because there is no documented German ABE for the ESS014, the lever is offered for racing on closed circuits and drag strips.
