Most air filter decisions get framed as an upgrade: pay more, receive more. This one does not work that way. Of the media Sprint Filter lists for the 2026 Trident 800, the dust-rated P14 sits below the standard element on the price list — roughly seven tenths of it — while the racing weave costs more than twice the standard. That leaves a suitability question in place of a budget question: is the air this Trident actually breathes dirty enough to be worth flow you would otherwise keep? The SM301P14 is a dry special non-woven rated at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec, and it earns its place from the roads you ride.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven media rated at 14 µm, specified for dust rather than for flow
- 1,800 l/m²/sec, openly below the standard element — that gap is the trade, stated plainly
- No oil at any point in the specification, so no film can migrate onto the air sensor
- Roughly double the filtering area of other performance filters, inside the unmodified series airbox
- Replaces the paper panel directly: no cutting, no adapter, no remap
- Washed and refitted rather than bought again; built to last the motorcycle's life, two-year warranty
A price order that is not a quality order
Four media share this airbox, and their numbers move against each other rather than together: a finer structure holds back more and lets less through. That is an exchange, not a ranking — the T12 is no better than the P14, and the P14 is not a discounted version of the standard element. Sprint Filter's own catalogue labels this medium for demanding conditions, which describes dust, not a performance grade.
Dust on a first-year roadster
A naked 800 triple bought in its first model year gets ridden everywhere in its first summer: field roads at harvest, gravel yards, the unsurfaced last kilometre to somebody's house, long stretches of roadworks where milled tarmac is kept airborne by the traffic. None of that is off-road riding, and all of it is what the airbox samples. Be blunt about what follows: a drop-in element does not make a series Trident 800 noticeably faster, and nobody should buy one expecting it to. What it delivers is an intake resistance that starts lower and stays where it is between cleanings, plus a part that gets serviced instead of repurchased.
Care and cleaning
Servicing the SM301P14 means compressed air played across the clean side and blown outwards through the media, lifting the load back out the way it came in. After a hard, dusty season, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Let it dry in open air only — never with a heat gun, never near a flame — and return it to the airbox dry. The full maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
Catalogued for the Triumph Trident 800 of 2026. Sprint Filter lists this P14 for the Trident alone: the Tiger Sport 800 shares the standard element with it, but the fine media are split between the two machines, and the Tiger Sport is listed for the T12 instead. Check your model year in the Fitment tab.
